Do Cadillacs Require Premium Gas
Not every Cadillac requires premium gas. The correct fuel depends on the model, year, and engine. Some Cadillacs use regular unleaded, while others recommend or require higher octane.
Check the fuel section of your owner's manual. If premium is required, use it. If premium is recommended, regular may be permitted, although performance can decrease.
What Is the Best Gas to Put in a Cadillac?
The best gasoline is the octane grade specified for your engine. At US pumps, regular is generally 87 octane, while premium is commonly 91 or 93. Octane measures resistance to engine knock, not overall fuel quality.
We recommend TOP TIER detergent gasoline when available. Its additives help limit engine deposits, regardless of octane. Buying premium when your engine only needs regular does not automatically improve horsepower or fuel economy.
Premium Gas Required vs. Premium Gas Recommended
Required means your Cadillac needs at least the specified premium octane. Using lower-grade gasoline can cause engine knock, reduce performance, and potentially damage the engine. Certain high-performance Cadillac engines require at least 91 octane.
Recommended means premium provides the intended performance, but the manual allows a lower grade. For example, some turbocharged engines recommend 91 octane while permitting 87 with reduced performance. The distinction matters, so check the wording for your exact engine.
Check the Fuel Grade for Your Model, Year, and Engine
The 2025 Cadillac XT5's 3.6-liter V6 recommends regular 87-octane gasoline. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder recommends premium 91 or higher but permits 87 with reduced performance. The 2025 XT6 has the same fuel-grade distinction between its V6 and 2.0-liter turbo.
Performance models can have stricter requirements. The 2025 CT4-V with the 2.7-liter turbocharged engine requires premium gasoline rated 91 or higher. The 2025 CT5-V Blackwing's supercharged 6.2-liter V8 also requires at least 91 octane. Consult your owner's manual under Recommended Fuel, since requirements vary by engine and model year.
What Happens If You Use Regular Gas?
If your Cadillac permits 87 octane, using regular is acceptable. On an engine that recommends premium, you might notice reduced acceleration or responsiveness because engine controls adjust to help prevent knock.
If premium is required, don't routinely substitute regular. If you've filled up with the wrong grade, avoid heavy acceleration and contact our service team for guidance. Persistent knocking, especially after refueling correctly, needs prompt attention. Don't ignore an illuminated check-engine light.
What Cadillacs Don't Take Premium Gas?
Cadillacs specified for 87 octane don't need premium. Examples include 2025 XT5 and XT6 models equipped with the 3.6-liter V6. Paying extra for higher octane typically offers no meaningful benefit in these engines.
Electric Cadillacs, including the LYRIQ and Escalade IQ, don't use gasoline at all. For gas-powered models, always verify your specific engine.
